Old San José Hospital
Location: San José Nº 1053
Type: Historical Monument
This structure was built in 1887 as a lazaret for people suffering of pox and cholera, which explains its contiguity with the General Cemetery. Starting in 1891, thanks to the efforts of hygienist doctor Ricardo Dávila Boza, the Hospital underwent a process of reconstruction and improvement. It was modernized yet again in 1929, at which point tisio-medicine, radiology, pathological anatomy, surgery and a laboratory were inaugurated as services. At the time it had a capacity of 400 beds specifically designated for tuberculosis patients, becoming a leader in the treatment of this disease. Its colonial-style facade, its centennial garden and its small chapel stand out. In 1960 it was established as a general hospital and by 1980 it assumed the role of Base Hospital of the Northern Metropolitan Area, a role it carried out until 1999. Today it is a Cultural Center that is home to a large collection of books, documents and photographs related to the history and cultural heritage of the world of healthcare. It was declared a Historical Monument on December 27, 1999, under Supreme Decree Nº 442.
